2026 FLOOD THREAT: NEMA WARNS OF POSSIBLE DISASTER AS ADAMAWA MAKES HIGH-RISK LIST.

The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, has officially launched the 2026 National Flood Preparedness and Response Campaign in Yola, Adamawa State.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting held on Tuesday, Umar explained that the initiative is designed to improve disaster readiness, strengthen early warning mechanisms, and enhance coordinated emergency response efforts ahead of the 2026 rainy season.

She expressed concern over the persistent impact of flooding across Nigeria, noting that floods continue to cause loss of lives, displacement of residents, destruction of property, and damage to essential infrastructure in many communities.

According to the NEMA boss, projections issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency identified 23 states alongside the Federal Capital Territory as areas vulnerable to severe flooding in 2026, with Adamawa among the affected states.

Umar stated that the forecast underscores the importance of taking preventive actions early to minimise the risks and effects of potential flood disasters nationwide.

She further revealed that NEMA has put together a nationwide preparedness strategy that includes simulation exercises, evacuation planning, training for emergency personnel, and the distribution of relief materials to flood-prone communities.

The Director-General also said the agency is deploying technical officers to various states to increase community sensitisation and ensure that early warning information reaches residents in high-risk areas.

She appealed to traditional institutions, religious bodies, media organisations, women and youth associations, as well as private sector stakeholders, to support awareness campaigns aimed at improving flood prevention and disaster management.

Umar stressed that effective disaster management can only be achieved through collective responsibility and active participation from all sectors of society.
